Hello all,
My apologies for more than a month since the last update. Not a lot has arisen with regards to new information about my tumor. I still believe that the Lord is healing me and this illness will not defeat me!
I will share a bit of a heart issue I have had recently. I have been trying to get a clear picture of what my life will look like in the coming months so I can plan accordingly. Well, this has been very difficult as I really have no idea what things will look like. Based on what has already happened this year, I don't feel any security in defining what to plan on. Thankfully, David Jeremiah to the rescue again. His message on the Lord's prayer Friday morning helped me to re-establish my footing. God gives us what we need for today (our daily bread) and no more is promised. So I gladly reduced the scope of my planning to just today. It is actually easier to me to move ahead this way. I am still working in certain directions (driving, living independently and so on) but can rest easier at the end of each day knowing I have done what I can for today.
Love and Prayers to you all,
Leif

Good News
Good news Indeed. I
have recently had a MRI to see how the radiation and chemotherapy affected my
tumor. After my oncologist reviewed the
Radiologist’s report, she told us that the remaining tumor is even smaller than
before. This is good news!! I now move into ‘maintenance chemo
mode’. That means that I take chemo one
week of every month for a year. Looks
like this blog is living up to its name.
My love and gratitude to you as the prayer of many is truly a powerful
weapon. More info to follow as we find
out new information.

RADIATION/CHEMO TREATMENT SESSION 1 COMPLETE
PRAISE GOD ON
HIGH!!! My Chemo and Radiation treatment
schedule ended 2 weeks ago this coming Wednesday. It must have been the Lord’s timing as the
fatigue was starting to set in. I have
had time to recoup for the most part and get ready for whatever is coming. Well…I guess that gives me enough time to get
ready for the upcoming race.
WHAT??!!?? Did you say ‘race’? Yes I did.
One of the major neuro-science and tumor treatment centers in Cincinnati
is sponsoring a 5K walk/run on OCT. 28th. It is called ‘Race for the Cure’. For more information about this race, go to
the following web address:
Information on my team,
‘Tumor Assassination Squad’ can be found on the following link:
This shows me how
far things have come in terms of healing and blessings. I still have many oncologist and therapy
appointments left. These should
hopefully be just to verify my health status in their respective areas.
Blog Supporters: Thanks
for the prayer support.
Sincerely Yours
(With Love, Peace and Prayers),

FINAL WEEK OF TREATMENT UPCOMING
Week #6 of
Radiation and Chemo is now complete. Leif heads into the final week of
treatment on Monday. This final week
will consist of 3days of Radiation addressing the remaining tumor in ‘Boost
Mode’. Chemo will continue this week also. Following this ‘33’ days of
treatment will be a ‘4 week’ break in treatment. At the end of this break Leif
will resume chemo [pill form] for 5 days out of the month for the remainder of
the year. Leif is feeling the drain in strength [fatigue] which occurs during
radiation chemo treatment. Radiation
builds up in your system and takes its toll. Leif has continued to exercise and
walk. PT, OT, and ST therapies have continued throughout treatment. Leif is
looking forward to finishing the radiation portion of treatment. Strength will
return in greater amounts and fatigue will go after radiation. This week Leif
has had more discomfort in the head area. This could be a result of the
radiation boost mode. Some medications are stopping. The body is now going to
have to rebuild Leif’s immune system. The immune system is now suppressed.
Blood work and counts will continue this week. Leif’s attitude is good and he
is staying hopeful for full recovery. Today Leif went to his church [4 Corners]
and then spent the day will his children and sister’s family. Therapy is scheduled
later in the week. Leif’s appetite is very good! Leif is including reading, PC
work, devotions, and appointments in his daily schedule. Thank God for helping
Leif through this struggle.
Blog Readers;
Thank you for your steadfast support and prayers. Your prayers continue to
announce to our God Leif’s needs. You have come to his aid at a time of great
need. Thanks again.

'BOOST MODE' / CHANGE IN TREATMENT FOR WEEK 6
Leif has now
completed ‘5’ weeks of radiation/chemo treatment. Leif works hard at staying
strong and keeping the right attitude. Leif continues to eat right and exercise. Walking
distances area are now at 1 mile plus. Exercises also are in areas in addition
to the physical. OT and ST Therapies help with the adjustments to deficits
which remain at this time. Cognitive sharpness and sustained focus are goals of
ST and OT Therapy. Professional Therapy
is a big-big plus. Leif’s reaction time continues to improve. [Praises!] Changes
are in store for Leif as he goes into week ‘6’ of treatment. The radiation
portion of treatment will go into ‘boost mode’ this week. This means that the
IMRT Beams Intensities will be increased in specific areas of the brain tumor.
These specific targets are located deep in the remaining tumor area. The goal
is to ‘knock out’ the ability of the tumor to replicate and grow. Leif has had
some stomach pressure of late. Headaches are low grade #1. Incision area pains
are present on occasion. We pray that these go in the course of healing.
Deficit improvements are our prayer petitions unto the Lord. Blood work is done
on Tuesdays. This Tuesday Oncology will check the ‘blood counts’. These tests
are indicators of the immune system status. When taking chemo and radiation the
immune system is suppressed. Staying healthy during treatment is paramount.
Leif feels that he is blessed because of his healthy state at this time during
the treatment. Church friends have been there for Leif. Leif attended his home
church today and enjoyed the timely message and worship. Leif then spend the
day with friends and his family, Abigail and Luke.
Blog Faithful;
Thanks for lifting up Leif in your prayers. The battle has been long and you
have remained on the battlefield. I and the family ‘Salute ‘your faithful steadfast
faith and action in prayer. Praises unto our ‘God and King’.

Motivational MIXTURE
My excitement and motivation grows as next week begins to get
closer. Why all the excitement you may ask?
Well, next week I will be doing a series of OT drills as it
relates to driving skills and functions. The Therapy will take place at
HealthSouth Outpatient Clinic located at Cincinnati’s Drake Facility. [Main
Facility] This has been a large hindrance to my ability to be more independent.
I look forward to using Drake’s tools and skilled Therapists to help get safely
back on the road again. It motivates me greatly to be able to work on this step
of my recovery.
The Lord continues to bless as my most recent ST (cognitive
function) session concluded with my Therapist telling me it had been my best
overall session yet. This is not to toot my own horn but to show my
humble audience the power of prayer. The cognitive areas have truly been
a struggle for me. To have this type of outcome really empowers me to
continue to stay positive during my recovery. I have found this to
be one of the most important aspects at this time in my life...that keeping a positive attitude can
make all the difference. It also helps me stay motivated to keep pushing
through to the next goal. Please remain in prayer as I begin to move from
my apartment to a new more convenient location. This will put me closer to my
medical care centers, family, friends, and my ever so helpful church family!!
It should be an exciting time during these next few months.
Sincerely Yours (With Love, Peace and Prayers),
Leif

WEEK #3 RADIATION/CHEMO COMPLETE/RESULTS EXCELLENT
Leif is at a
milestone: [Week #3 of Radiation/Chemo Treatment Complete]. The Goal of this
IMRT Treatment in combination with the Chemo Treatment is to destroy the tumor
tissue and keep it from replicating. [Pray that this is successful 100%] Keep
in mind that 95% of the tumor is gone and we are concerned with the remaining
tumor. [Awesome Praise] Excellent
Results are great motivators! Let’s pray that the remaining tumor is taken out
through treatment with no deficits caused.
Leif is getting up early and getting his
nutrition and focusing on the day’s events. Leif starts with reading the ‘Text’
and beginning the daily routine. Leif had PT Therapy this week. PT workouts
were with Resistance bands for strengthening of the muscles in the hips for balance.
The PT Therapist established written goals for completion of PT Therapy
requirements. It is like graduation. This
coming week Leif has OT, PT and ST therapies. Leif continues to push his
walking workouts to longer distances. Today Leif went to the market with Mom.
Yesterday the day was spent with Brother Nate for a whole day outing. These are
good PT, ST, and OT workouts. Returning to community means getting out to
everyday activities and getting involved. The baseline for the pain level of
headaches is #1. [This is good] The incision area is painful at times. Remember
the skull was cut open and is healing. Titanium plates and screws are slowly
grafting with the skull-bone. Leif is
increasing in strength and stamina. He is on his PC daily.
Blog Warriors: You
are great and strong supporters of Leif’s cause. When you pray, the Father God
hears and takes action. He is waiting for us to attend to Kingdom business,
helping one another. Thank you for caring! Thanks be unto God.

TREATMENT WEEK #2 COMPLETE; READY FOR WEEK #3
Leif is getting
ready to start week #3 of Radiation and Chemo Treatment. Leif feels blessed
that 95% of the tumor is gone and that the remainder is being treated. Leif is
starting his day with nourishment, journaling, reading, listening to Dr. David
Jeremiah, and then off to exercise or therapy. Week #2 of Radiation and Chemo
is now complete. It is difficult and disorienting being strapped down to
receive the IMRT precision radiation. Leif wears a mask which is then attached
to the table during the treatment. Leif is learning how to handle this treatment
better. This week Leif will meet with his ST and PT therapist. Outpatient
therapy given by professional therapist has proven to be very instrumental and
helpful. Leif’s recovery has been maximized by outpatient therapy. Walking the
neighborhood is also helping Leif to stay strong physically. This week also,
Leif will meet with the Nuero-surgeon, Dr. Goodall. He is a great Surgeon who
helped Leif when he first needed help during his struggle with this tumor. Leif
will also meet with his current care givers this week. Blood work will be done
this week. The baseline pain is a #1 headache. This is a great blessing when
looking back at what has transpired in Leif’s life these last 3 months. Some
discomfort is still experienced around the incision area, especially following
the radiation treatment. Some deficits still need our prayers and the touch of
the Master.
Blog Faithful;
Thanks again for your steadfast support through prayer and helping with
practical needs. You are part of the healing solution. The Lord hears your
prayers and sees your hearts of faith. Details are falling into place! Leif
states, “You have been a great blessing”. Thanks be unto our God and King.

'RADIATION AND CHEMO WEEK #1 FINISHED'
Week #1 of
Radiation [IMRT] and Chemo has been completed. Leif did well with the treatment. One morning he had ‘nausea’ from the
treatment. The headaches are down to a #1
pain level. Thank God. The ‘Incision areas’ still cause some discomfort and
pain. Leif is continuing to rise early
and start his day with reading and nourishment. He is continuing with his medication regimen
to assist with the post surgery conditions. Leif met with Dr. J. Breneman this week and
reviewed the radiation treatment. Dr. B.
is involved with the setting up of ‘IMRT beam instructions and details’. Dr. B. informed Leif that ‘95%’ of the tumor
is gone. The remaindering tumor will be
treated with the ‘IMRT’ radiation and Chemo. This week Leif will meet with Dr. Chaudhary
who is involved with Hematology Oncology. Dr. C. is part of the ‘Care Team ‘that is
involved with Leif’s case. Leif is continuing with out-patient therapy, PT, ST,
and OT. He continues to structure his
day to include exercise and other home therapy assignments. Leif and Mom went to ‘4 Corners Church’ this
weekend. They met with friends following
the service. Leif is on the ‘Path to
Recovery and Healing’ and is working hard at doing his part.
Blog Followers;
Thanks for your faithful support. Your
prayers and active care are making the difference. Best Blessings to you for this week.

Don't Be Afraid
Today I learned little something; the right attitude a little faith you can get through anything
.I have been looking at today today from the planning perspective for some time now . I probably let some anxiety build up over time. I took chemo and radiation fir first time and I was very nervous at first The staff eased some of that as I began to settle into IMRT Radiation treatment cycles round lunch time. (IMRT REFERENCE http://www.mayoclinic.org/imrt/)
I made it through with no problems and feel blessed to have such good day considering my discomfort at first. I could have thought about negative stuff all day but where would tat have gotten me. Listen Ladies and Gents, Fear Not for He has overcome the World (John 16:33). So moving forward for the next 6 weeks of tretment I choose to fear not!
Most Sincerely Yours,
Leif

'VIA PRAYER & VIA ACTION'
Leif rose early
today and began his morning routine, reading the Holy Bible and prayer,
breakfast, medications and then out the door for his PT [walking ½ mile]. Leif’s strength continues to increase [PT],
normal activities are on the rise [OT], and cognitive skills are edging better.
[ST]. Following the walk Leif prepared
to go to 4 Corners Church for the 1st time since the operation. He and Mom went and found a place to sit. They
quietly entered and quietly left after the message. His day was full today with family events and
spending some time with friends. This week will see the start of a new phase in
Leif’s healing, the ‘radiation and chemo’ treatments. I will
update the blog to share how everything goes. On Friday Leif met with Dr. Golnick. He checked Leif’s eyes and found that his
vision is 20/20. The left eye vision block is something which will have to be
looked at when the swelling goes down in the brain. Leif will make an appointment to see him again.
Blog Friends; Thank you for being there for Leif! The
book of ‘Mark CH. 2 tells the story of ‘friends’ who carried their sick friend
to Jesus the Lord. They took extreme measures to get him into the Lord’s presence.
This week let us ‘carry’ Leif into the Lord’s presence via ‘prayer’ and via ‘action’. Let us be strong in faith and the Spirit of
our God. Praise Him!

PATRIOTS HONOR / THE CALL & THE CAUSE
This morning
started early for Leif. He rose early to start his day with reading and
breakfast. Walking with ankle weights
has been added to his daily regimen. Leif
is also beginning to work out with weights on a daily basis. Nothing heavy yet is in the routine. OT came in the form of some outings to take
care of business and lunch. Later PT
came in the form of a neighborhood walk.
Still later more PT came in the form of additional exercise at a local
park. This is all good for building strength. Monday the Radiation Treatments begin. These treatments will take place Monday –Friday.
Saturday and Sunday will be off days. Chemo will also take place at the same time. This is a coordinated medical approach to
treating the remaining tumor and malignant remnants. Medications will be reviewed and changed to
reflect the changing treatments. Pray
that these treatments are successful and completely cleanse the impacted area.
Blog Patriots; I
and the family salute you. You have risen to the call and the cause. You have
been touched in your hearts and responded in prayer and care. Together we will trust
in the ‘Good Hand’ of our God to provide healing and restoration for Leif. Praises unto the Holy Father, our Savior King
and the Holy Spirit of God.

HEALING CONTINUES WITH THE HELP OF GOD AND FRIENDS
Today Leif was up
early and into his routine. Nourishment
to get the metabolism started, reading to get his spiritual input, and walking
to get his physical exercise. Leif’s
appetite is that of a working man. Leif
had PT and OT therapies today. PT worked
with balance and strength on the left side.
OT worked with left and right scanning. Leif continues to get stronger, it seems
daily. This week Leif should get the
schedule for his radiation treatment. The
reports on the MRI and Cat scan are also due this week. Also this week Leif has
his appointment with Dr. Golnik at the Cincinnati Eye Institute. Dr. Golnik will give Leif an eye examination
and make his recommendations. The pain levels have continued to slowly come
down. The incision area is less
sensitive than it was before; he is even sleeping on it. Proper medication is very important to this
healing process. The adjustment and
deletion of medications, as the healing continues, is a matter for prayer.
Remember all the Doctors, Nurses, Medical Staff and Therapists in your prayers.
They are instruments in the hands of our God for good.

What a Weekend
It has been a long journey thus far. Yesterday I had
a great time with my family and was able to catch up with many that I don't frequently see. The family event truly ended up being a great time. Plum tuckered me out though, so I
got some healing sleep which was much needed. As I head into the next
phases of treatment I need to be strong and at my optimum health level.
Leif Out,
See You All This Week,
Leif
Additional Notes from Pop; Last week the ‘Mask’ was made for his radiation treatments. The
starting date for these treatments will be made know to us this week. Also the results
of last week’s MRI and Cat-scan will be revealed this week. Thanks
you for your prayers and support. The results of your prayers and the moving
hand of the Lord are truly felt and experienced by Leif and the family. Please
continue to pray for complete healing and the healing process. God Bless!

THE JOURNEY INCLUDES GOOD EXPECTATION
Leif‘s
day started with nourishment and centering the core by meditating on Prov.
19:27. Medications are taken on a strict
schedule. Following journaling Leif took his morning walk. He is doing well
with his walking exercises. At noon, Leif went to outpatient therapy. ST, PT,
and OT were linked together for a 3 hour session. Leif said that they worked
him hard. ST was concerned with executive function, which deals with higher
level cognitive skills. PT isolated the weaker muscle groups. The PT therapist worked
with leg raises [scissor moves etc.] OT worked with exercises specific to the
eye function, scanning and utilizing full vision to complete random text
assignments. The pain levels were managed well today topping at ‘3’. This week
Leif will see the Radiologist for a ‘Mask Fit’. This mask will be used over the
course of Leif’s radiation treatments. The radiation will be directed at the
remaining tumor. There are some good indicators of continuing healing in Leif’s
body. Please pray that the manifestation of healing continues day by day. ‘Praises
to our God’.

Switching Gears
The road to this point has been interesting and certainly challenging. I have been released from the inpatient type of medical attention and from the inpatient therapy type rehabilitation. Where To Next? As I look to the road ahead, I find that I am blessed to be able attend outpatient therapies. This allows me to shift from something like 2nd gear to something more like 3rd gear...gosh, makes me feel like I have my old Jeep Wrangler again. I am able to shift gears due to good nutrition and being able go keep up with exercise outside of the outpatient therapies. Looks like another blessing in disguise...thanks to your prayers!
Even the other day, I was able to receive outpatient Physical, Occupational and Cognitive therapies, as well as walk several days in a row around the neighborhood. As I work to gain strength for upcoming treatment and management of my tumor, I have found that again your love, prayers, and support have helped me switch gears and lean into this new piece of the journey.
One day at a time. I have the strength for that.
Most Sincerely Yours, Leif.

THE DAILY REPORT / HOPE ABIDES
This
has been an informative day consisting of meetings with the Neurological Surgeon,
the Radiation Oncologist, and the Hematology Oncologist. Leif has been blessed
with great medical doctors. Leif has his incision sutchers removed. The
Pathology report came back indicating that the remaining tumor would need to be
treated with precision radiation and chemo therapy. This phase of the healing path will begin soon.
Leif was checked for vision,
coordination, blood, weight, and vitals. Leif continues to strengthen himself in
body, mind and spirit. Tomorrow he begins outpatient therapy. [PT, ST, OT] Leif
has a great attitude and advances on the Recovery Path with faith and practical
implementation of common-sense techniques. He is looking forward to returning
to work and to community. The upcoming days are KEY in this process. Leif had a
good PT walking exercise this evening extending his route. He is making ready
for tomorrow’s sessions.

‘AMAZING GRACE’/ THANK YOU GOD
Leif
is pushing hard to gain physical, cognitive, and occupational healing and
restoration of health. Today Leif
increased his roadwork, walking now on the streets of the neighborhood. PT workouts are continual but as a formal walking
workout Leif engaged 3 times today. PC, ledger work, journaling made up his
cognitive work. Luminosity will be added to ST this week. OT work is being seen
in his return to life in the setting of the home, and going about his normal
routines. Tensions still are coming into play. This week will bring new
information on the upcoming treatment program. Visits to the neurologist,
pathologist, and radiologist will come into play this week. Outpatient PT, OT, and
ST work will take place. A visit is also slated to the Eye Institute. Please
continue to pray for healing in the areas of the incision, tumor, left side
weakness, left eye deficit, and all areas that require the touch of our God.
Please pray for all of the medical related visits, doctors, therapists, and
medical staff that will be involved with Leif this week.
Blessings
to the ‘BLOG DISCIPLES’! You are so faithful and so needed. The Healing process
is taking a ‘new turn’. We look to our ‘Lord’ to make the way a wonderful and divine
experience. We ask our ‘Lord’ to touch Leif with his ‘Healing and Loving Hands’

GOOD TO THE LAST DROP
Hey All, Leif here.
I will be moving on from the inpatient treatment tomorrow with their blessings and instructions. This did not stop them, however, from putting a full day's agenda together for me:) The therapies today were the most challenging yet for each of the discipline areas (Cognitive, occupational and physical).
Hidden in the middle of my day, the LORD blessed me with a great motivator. One off my therapists that was standing in for the regularly scheduled one was a member of my church ( 4 Corners Community Church). I got to catch up on the latest happenings and felt a great re-connection to my church family through my session.
Blog Viewers; thanks for your faithful support. Your prayers definitely are making a big difference. Stay tuned in for the next phase of healing. God Bless!

RECOVERY PATH; CHANGES AHEAD
Leif
was up early and getting started with his therapy. The first session was
PT. Leif was out walking and doing steps
on a longer route. The session continued with a lower body workout with leg
weights. ST followed with ‘Advanced Memory Instructions”. This was challenging and Leif did very well.
After lunch OT followed. This was an upper body workout with weights done in a
group setting. Pushing the limits was
the way of therapy today. The nurses are cleaning the incision area to remove
clots. This will ready the area for stitch removal next week. Leif’s pain
levels are lower than a week ago dropping to ‘3-4’ as a base line. Leif is
looking good and has a great appetite.
As Leif shared yesterday, good changes are coming. The current inpatient
therapy program will shift to an outpatient therapy program this week. The next phase of treatment is approaching. Leif
is strong in faith, being strengthened in body, and ready for the next
steps.
‘Blog
Followers’, you are the ‘Soldiers of Prayer’ in Leif’s struggle. We thank you
and salute your ‘faith in action’. Many victories are already in place and
there will be many more to come. You have a part in these victories! All Praise unto our Lord, the ‘Lord of Host’.

New Horizons
Hey All, Leif Here.
Today was a productive day in many ways. First, I was able to participate in therapy sessions that were both challenging, but also contained multiple disciplines. For example, an occupational therapy session that was challenging physically. Definitely got the full bit of activity today!
Today was also the day when my review and potential discharge plans were discussed with my family and me. This was so we could be aware of their professional views of what it will take to transfer me out of the inpatient treatment and rehabilitation environment and into a more self-supporting role elsewhere. The prognosis is looking up as a recommended approach to outpatient therapies was the primary focus!! I can't begin to express how much all your love, prayers and support have added to these victories. That's all for today as I begin to consider these new directions. With my sincere Love and blessings,

CHANGES COMING; GOOD STUFF
Leif’s
day went well, but with challenges. Challenges come in the form of tensions
that build when the timing of the medications, therapies, and meal times are in
conflict. Being ready for the therapy
and staying ahead of the tensions [headaches] is the goal. The ST, OT, and PT
therapists are pushing the envelope and that is a good challenge and the
purpose for Leif being at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital. Cognitive work,
dexterity work, and balance work were all on the table today. Leif is putting
in a full day’s work on strengthening goals and working on all motor and
cognitive skills. Homework is assigned for off duty work. Leif’s pain level is
on a baseline of 3-4. This is coming down, but tensions sometimes drives in up.
Tomorrow Leif and family will meet with the HealthSouth Therapy Group to
discuss the next steps for Leif, both at inpatient therapy and at home. Leif’s attitude
is great. Tonight he said that “The Lord doesn’t want us to miss what he is
doing in our lives”. Thank you Lord!
Blog
friends; Leif and I will keep you posted with updates. Leif is totally focused
on his goals for recovery at this time. He will update you again soon. Thanks
for your faithful prayers. Your prayers and compassion are making the
difference and are felt by Leif and the family.

Attitude Ajustment
Leif Here.
Today my Physical, Occupational and Cognitive therapies (PT, OT and ST/CT) were both challenging and rewarding...leaving me ready for a good night's rest. Physical discomforts were managed well today, allowing me full participation in all my activities.
In the past few days, sometimes it seems like with so many little course changes recently, I had allowed a bit of commotion to cloud my focus.
Now having had a few stable days in a row, I feel like a pilot that just made a minor course correction. Feeling better about rehabilitation's daily positive outcomes, and feeling better and stronger every day certainly goes a long way to cultivate a healthy outlook and attitude about the future!
Thanks to all your support, love, and prayers, I just look forward to the great things that are yet to come:)

PATH TO OPTIMAL READINESS
Leif
had a great day today, although the pain level [7] crept back in at the close
of the evening. He is looking great. Leif’s day started with the OT
[Occupational Therapist]. Leif showered and shaved in this session. After a break he worked with the PT [Physical Therapist]. Today the PT session consisted of walking and walking faster. Steps
up and down were next in the session. Later Leif worked with the ST. Speech and
Cognitive Therapist. His therapy evaluations are getting higher. Let’s keep
these therapy sessions in our prayers because they are very beneficial. They
are ‘key components’ in the pathway to ‘optimal readiness’ for upcoming
treatment. Sodium levels are ok now. Leif is concerned about his rash and
sensitivity in his left hand. There are some deficits to remember in our
prayers, left eye vision block and weakness on the left. Great improvements are
visible and clearly seen! Praise to our
God!
Leif
was blessed to have two neurosurgeons operate on him who are rated in the top
1% nationally. He is blessed to have great ‘Blog Friends’ like you who care and
share their hearts with our ‘Father God’. Thank you for your faithful prayers! Our God is listening, our God is working, our God is healing! God Bless!

A NEW PATH, THERAPY AND HEALING
Today
Leif‘s day started at University NSICU. Breakfast, medications and
therapies were on his agenda. PT sessions went well, walking and exercise. He
was seen by the doctors and the Pain Management Team. His regimen of
medications was adjusted. During his stay at University, Leif had a chest x-ray
which revealed some lung congestion. He was given an
inhale device to clean out the lungs. Leif’s blood pressure is being monitored
and is a little high. Leif was seen later by his HealthSouth Rehabilitation
Hospital Case Administrator. The path to HealthSouth was reset for 7 to 10 days
of therapy. He returned to HealthSouth in mid-afternoon. This is a great
outcome for Leif and will put him under the guidance of excellent PT, OT, and
ST therapists. When we visited Leif tonight, he looked great and was in good
spirits. His pain level was around 5+. Leif’s goals are to settle into this
time at HealthSouth Therapy and to prepare to get home in a healthy way,
equipped with the tools he needs to go forward in this healing process.
Blog Friends; thanks for taking these daily updates on Leif and
converting them into prayers addressed to the Lord on High. All Praise unto our
God.

POTHOLE ON RECOVERY ROAD
Today Leif’s day started in the normal way, breakfast,
medications, and therapy. Around
lunch time his doctor recognized Leif‘s blood pressure was high and that there
was increased swelling around the incision area. This condition was causing sleepiness and some disorientation.
Leif’s main health care managers and doctors decided the best solution
was to send Leif to University Hospital NICU. Leif arrived at University
Hospital at about 4:30 PM. We arrived a bit later and Leif shared with us that
he was having a different type of pain in his trauma area, more intense. Leif
had a CT scan which was reviewed by the neurologist and medical staff. The doctors are proactive in their approach to eliminate any
problems before they can get bigger. They will look at possible infections,
fluids, medications, and other potential causes for this problem. Let’s pray that the recommendations by the medical team are
the right solutions to correct this serious problem. By the Grace of God Leif
will be back at HealthSouth and plugging into his therapies very soon.
Blog Friends; thanks so much for being there for Leif. When you
are in the deep, you need the prayers and the help of your friends. God Bless!

TODAY WAS GOOD, BUT IT WAS ROUGH
Leif reports that today was a ‘good day’, and that he feels ‘OK’. He was sharing his day with me as he was trying to eat. The
top pain levels were in the 5-6 range today, down from 7-8 range that was common a
few days ago. The next goal is to see the headache pain levels fall even more. Leif had ‘2’ PT sessions today. The first was with dumbbells. During this session, Leif had
some brain tension and had to back it off. Later during his 2nd PT session he had good results in his walking workout. The ST
worked with Leif in the cognitive speech and visual block area. This was very beneficial. Leif let me know that
‘it is rough’, but progress is happening. Leif had the
opportunity to interact and pray with other patients today in the therapy
sessions. Leif shared that he was looking forward to his shower and a good
night’s rest. Let’s pray that health improvements continue day by day this
week!
Blog Followers; Thanks for your faithful and steadfast support.
Your comments are encouraging to Leif. Your prayers are invaluable. The Holy
Text states that ‘the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous and his ears are
attentive unto their prayers’. God Bless!

A BETTER DAY, PAIN LEVELS DROP
Today, Sunday, was a better day for Leif.
He was more relaxed and looked better. Leif starts his day with cereal and a
banana to get his metabolism moving and get some nutrients into his stomach.
The intensity of his headaches came down to a level ‘5’ today.
Praises! The headaches had been in the’7-8’ range which as you can
imagine are ‘hard to bear’. Factors that affected this change are prayers,
controlled environment, medications and meals coming on a timely basis. Leif is
pro-active in his communication with the HealthSouth staff and nurses. He
understands the timing of rest, meals, medications and therapy must align to
keep the head trauma managed until healing comes. The therapists will conduct a
meeting with Leif to set their programs in place. Thus far evaluations and
exercises have given them some basis for recommending therapies. Leif is
getting stronger and has had increased outcomes in his therapies this week.
Also Leif will meet with Dr. Warnick’s
representative from University Point to discuss his case. This week will
consist of meetings, therapies, and appointments. Leif has said that; this has
been a week of learning the ropes and that this week ahead seems to be coming
together in an organized manner. Leif spends time in the ‘Word of God’ and in
His presence so that he will recognize the Lord’s lamp in his life and in his
day. He has requested his PC be brought to him.
Grace and Blessings unto you, Blog Friends
of Leif, your strong compassionate prayers and faithful support are making the
difference. This week is ‘Key’. We will see improvements caused by
our God and Savior’s loving help!

‘HARD TIMES BECOME HARDER’
Today Leif’s day included Physical Therapy [PT] and
Speech/Language Therapy [ST]. The therapists even assign homework. Following
his morning routine of breakfast and medications Leif was tackling his therapy.
It is important for Leif to maximize his therapy, but while doing therapy [PT
and OT] his pain often becomes great. The pain associated with the trauma area
of the brain can become severe. Today was an especially hard day for Leif. He
experienced what he calls a few ‘Hiccups’. This is the current dilemma and will
improve as the day of his tumor surgery becomes more distant. Please pray
that Leif’s head trauma heals and that his pain subsides.
Leif was assigned a private room which will accommodate his needs
better. This is a blessing. Leif has some upcoming appointments with his
doctors to review all medications and treatments.
Blog Warriors, I salute you! You are carrying the fallen in prayer
as the ‘Good Samaritan’ cared for the brother in need. The Lord bless you and
bless Leif with healing from his ‘High Place’.

Therapy at HEALTHSOUTH; 'It is Hard'
Today Leif was up at 6AM to have his vitals taken, receive
his medications, and have his cereal and banana. The PT [Physical
Therapist] had Leif work out with Elastic bands today. He was working on 4
muscle groups doing 20 reps each. A headache came during the workout.
The OT [Occupational Therapist] had Leif doing walking and stairs today. The ST
[Speech Therapist] worked with Leif’s cognitive abilities. She said his
abilities are through the roof. These classes help to move Leif along on the
‘Path to Recovery’. Leif shared tonight: ‘there is a purpose for
this time in my life; I seek the Lord in order to keep my spiritual and mental
balance’.
Blog Friends, Leif says ‘It is hard’. Let’s be strong and carry
him into the presence of the Lord through prayer. Thank you friends! Improvements
are seen in his life daily. He has pain, he has some deficits, but
he is a faithful fighter.

Therapy in Action at HEALTHSOUTH
Today
Leif met with his therapists for the evaluation of his needs and the establishment
of goals. HealthSouth therapists will help Leif reach his full potential. Leif
met with his assigned ST [Speech and language Therapist]. She works with the
cognitive aspects of rehabilitation [speech, memory, language, social
interaction] Leif did very well with the ST. Leif also met with his OT [Occupational
Therapist] The OT addressed Leif’s needs in the area of his daily activities.
Today this ranged from getting out of bed and going to the bathroom and taking
a shower. The OT will address simple routines and go towards more complex
tasks. Leif also has a PT [Physical Therapist] The PT worked with Leif in the
gym. He worked out walking and doing steps. Today’s gym time was short. Leif is
on the ‘Road to Recovery’ and needs our prayers. His brain surgery was just 6
days ago. Headaches, general weakness mostly on the left, and his left eye
vision issues continue to be priorities for prayer. Leif has requested prayer
for his left hand today. Let us petition
our Great God to release healing from the Sanctuary on High. Thanks to all of
you, Leif’s friends, who faithfully support him in prayer. Healing is happening! God Bless!

'Physical Therapy' at HEALTHSOUTH Begins
Today, Leif transferred from University
Hospital ICU to the HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital at Drake Center. His
cognitive functions are intact. His memory is good. His humor is
with him. He is in good spirits! He has a great appetite. VSS. Lab
values are stable. He continues to have headaches for which he is being
treated with pain medication. His blood sugars remain stable. All of his
IVs have been removed!! Yeah!! He is struggling with weak motor
skills on the left side of his body. [Mainly left leg and arm] These will
be strengthened through ‘physical therapy’ at HealthSouth. Leif’s left eye has
some peripheral vision issues and needs our prayers. Friends, please continue to pray that this
time spent at HealthSouth will be very productive for Leif’s healing and
rehabilitation. Day #1 of ‘physical therapy’ starts tomorrow morning. Exercising,
physical therapy, proper diet, and rest are key components this week. Thank
you, my friends, for bearing Leif’s burden into the presence of the Lord. Our Lord
is caring and concerned also, and He will take Divine Action as we bear our
heartfelt requests unto Him. Thank you Lord! Let us look forward to this day with faithful
anticipation of Leif’s improvements! Thanks to all the doctors, nurses, therapists, medical staff and blog friends that have helped Leif and are continuing to help him in his recovery. God Bless!

Post Surgery Day 4; Good News Continues
Today
Leif had two therapy sessions which included walking and exercise. The walking
route is increasing in length daily. The ‘plan’ is to transport Leif to the
Rehabilitation Hospital at Drake for 'physical therapy' which is necessary
following his tumor surgery. The Rehabilitation Liaison came to meet with Leif
today. He is being evaluated for the move to Drake Center which will be a
'milestone step' in the recovery process. His faith, spirit and work ethic
remain high. His appetite remains very good. His taste buds work very well. His
memory is sharp and his analytical detailing is tremendous. His mental capacity
appears to be 100%.
Pray that
Leif qualifies and is accepted into the Rehabilitation Hospital at Drake. This
will help him to be strengthened and rebuild muscle control. Pray also in
regards to his ‘left peripheral vision’ that it would improve. Your prayers make the difference!
On behalf of Leif and the
family, we say too our blog site friends: Thank you so much… for being strong
to pray and support Leif in his time of struggle. I
read a plaque in the University Hospital main entrance area which said: And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we
shall reap if we do not lose heart. [Galatians 6:9] The promise is for Leif and all of us. Praises to our God!

Post Surgery Day 3; More Progress!
Leif continues to be faithful in body, mind, and spirit to the 'Recovery Process'. Last night '2' tubes were removed! The drain for internal bleeding and another for relief. [Blessings 1 & 2]. Today Leif made more progress on the 'Path to Recovery'. His day started with getting out of bed and eating breakfast while sitting in a chair. [Blessing 3]. The 'Physical Therapists' came in to work with Leif. After a surgery of this nature therapy is required. Walking presents a challenge. The right leg is doing well and the left leg requires focus in the walking process. Leif was happy to have the therapists guiding him with their expertise. Leif completed his walk with difficulty. [Blessing 4]. Chaplin Steve came in and spoke with Leif during his lunch. He graciously prayed with Leif concerning his healing. [Blessing 5]. Leif has been blessed with a loving God, great doctors, nurses, therapists, other medical professionals and friends like you. [Blessing 6]. Your prayers and support and Father God's favor bring about the blessings. [Blessing 7]. Kindly pray for Leif's physical activities: weakness on the left side to be strengthened; a lessening of the pain levels of his headaches and the perfect functioning of the '5' senses. God Bless!

Post Surgery Day 2; Good Progress!
Today began with Leif resting in the horizontal position and ended with Leif sitting in a chair chowing down pizza, soup, cookies, etc. Today's cat scan showed the brain's air pocket greatly reduced. Dr. Warnick cleared Leif to stop the use of Oxygen and begin to sit up, walk etc. This is a giant step forward. His pain levels came down also with the reduction of the air pocket. Today Leif made great progress in the recovery phase. Praise God. Now he faces the goals of regaining strength and muscle tone through exercise and walking. Leif requested his books and journal to begin a time of reading and writing. Let's pray that tomorrow brings new steps forward in the 'Recovery Process'. Thanks be unto our God for the continued healing taking place in Leif's life. Thanks to all of you for your continued support and prayers. You are true friends! Leif will be back in the Blog's authorship soon to tell his story.

Post Surgery Day 1, "Not to Worry"
Leif is eating very well. His appetite is back. He eats breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus fruits! He even ordered a Frisco Melt Combo with a Vanilla Shake from 'Steak and Shake'. He finished it off big time! Dr. Warnick came in today and checked Leif. He is using cat scans to monitor the brain conditions. Pressures are being watched due to an air pocket. At present Leif is under bed rest restrictions and must lie flat and stay on oxygen. When these conditions are normal Leif will be released to normal activities such as sitting and walking. Let us 'pray' that the air pressures in the brain return to normal very soon. Leif wanted to see a picture of his tumor. Dr. Warnick laughed and got his cell phone out and showed Leif the pic. of the tumor. Leif said "Praise God it is out of there!". As Dr. Warnick was leaving he shared with Leif and Mom "...Not to Worry.'
Friends of Leif; Thanks for your strong compassionate prayers and support. Your prayers are making the difference! Soon Leif will be back in the driver's seat of this blog. Until then I will update the 'Blog' to keep you 'Posted'

Leif's Surgery Today [Success]
This morning Leif went into surgery at 6:45 AM. At 2:00 PM the surgery finalized and Leif headed for PACU [Post Anesthesia Care Unit]. We consider this operation to be very successful. Mom, Lena and I met with Dr. Warnick and Dr. Zuccarello following the surgery. Their report was very good. They detailed some of the intricate work that had been performed. Most of the massive tumor had been removed. We thanked the Surgeons for their exceptional labors. The pathology report on the removed section will give the doctors insight as to the best treatment plan. The University Medical Teams, doctors, and nurses attending to Leif were amazing and did a great job. We thank our God and Saviour for blessing this operation. Praises to His Name! Leif will now begin his 'Recovery Time'. He will be in ICU for a few days in order to stabilize under watchful care. Presently he is experiencing severe pain following the surgery. Let's pray that he heals without any set backs. Please pray that in the course of the next week that all of his body functions, his vision and other senses return to their designed operation and that he has 'no deficits'. We will keep you posted. Thanks for your faithful prayer support and compassionate friendship for Leif. You guys are amazing friends!
God Bless!

Vital Signs, Recovery is a Go
Leif shares that he knows that this is a major and serious surgery. He feels that he has been taught that the recovery path takes time and has to be journeyed on patiently. Leif believes he has been prepared to walk this path and is grateful that the Lord has shown him the steps of recovery. Strength and health return day by day. Having gone through one surgery already, Leif has learned a bit about the recovery path. Surgery is tomorrow! Lets pray and ask our loving God to bless the surgery and Leif's return to full health with no deficits.

A Milestone Update - Gotta Love Technology
I don't have a whole lot of information to share for updates, but hope to share some thoughts about all the activity lately.
Just so much has happened so quickly, it has been hard to capture and process it all. The past day or two have given me time to think through some things. I have had some time to bounce feelings and thoughts off of friends and family, and pray through my struggles and situation. So as I have been going through this time in my life, one thing that has hit me is all the technology that has been used for my evaluation and treatment.
There have been CAT scans, MRI imaging, and FMRI with Tensor imaging. There is even a process they are using that will link and bind the MRI and FMRI information so the upcoming surgery to remove the tumor can be even more accurately performed. This greatly enhances their ability to know before they cut that they are touching an exact area they want instead of being unsure. In this, I take comfort that the Lord has not only provided the best means for success, but at the same time can't help but be amazed at how advanced our technology is to help me and others like me have the best outcomes.
Tomorrow I head down to be admitted to the hospital so I can begin the pre-op work necessary before my surgery on Friday. So long for now, God Bless and I'll talk to you in a few days.

The Open Door
Today I had an appointment with the neurosurgeon that has been managing my tumor case. He and others had already reviewed the FMRI and MRI reports and was ready to review everything with me. I didn't realize how much information was going to be divulged at once during my meeting with him. The purpose of this meeting was to decide whether further surgery would be advantageous or not before treatment.
Now before meeting with me I learned he had already received unanimous consensus from 5 collaborating neurosurgeons that to surgically remove the tumor before starting other forms of treatment would provide the best chance of success. At the time my mind reeled at the thought of another major brain surgery. As this information settled, he told me of another neurosurgeon he had already asked to be a co-surgeon with him during the operation. This surgeon he spoke of is not only highly regarded in his field but has worked with my doctor many times in the past. His passion for the best outcome for me and skills at lining up the best team to get those results touched my heart. I began to feel that all the Lord's work in this situation was beginning to show me to a door...this door being another surgery.
With the opportunity of this door there comes much fear for me. I mean, we are talking about my brain! The door has some risks...just like any situation like this would bring. So what to do, how to decide? I will just break it down like this. The direction I feel the Lord leading me is that he has setup an ideal circumstance for healing...he has directed me to this point through a number of key situations...the door is before me and feels difficult to pass through. I will continue to put my trust in him and walk through the door.
Result? Currently I am scheduled to have the procedure May 25 and feel that it is the best decision I could have made.

Blessings Of Technology
Clearly your support and prayers have positively impacted the direction of my treatment.
Until now my astrocytoma (brain tumor) was believed to be only grade 2 meaning generally non-aggressive. This week I had several appointments with the specialists managing my tumor. After these visits there was a multi-disciplinary panel of specialists that comprehensively reviewed things to decide the next step of treatment. The Board's conclusions this week revealed a possibility that part of the tumor may also be grade 3 which is more aggressive. Because of this, surgical resection must be considered before any other therapy in order to remove as much of the grade 3 tissue as they can. In order to determine how safe another resection of the tumor is they ordered an FMRI (Functional MRI) with Diffuse Tensor Imaging. This is one of the most precise ways to map various functional areas of the brain. This was done to be sure they can remove the tumor tissue they want without potential for damage to other areas of my brain that are touching or are too close.
The FMRI was an interesting experience. Performing tasks with basic motor skills, guided thoughts, listening, watching visual element and other various stimuli for about an hour inside the MRI tube with my head motionless and taped in place was quite the ordeal. I find it truly amazing how the Lord has enabled us to harness such technology in order to help treat such complex medical issues. Essentially I will find out how this influences the treatment direction in the next few days...more updates to follow.

Progress By Any Measure
Had several appointments today to begin setting the stage for tumor treatment plans. There was not any definite conclusions made, since a full multi-disciplinary board is planned to review the best treatment for my tumor...which by the way is called an OLIGO-DENDRO-ASTRO-CYTOMA GLIOMA. After they review everything, they will get back with me about options, possibilities, implications and the like.
Praises for today include:
- Removal of several blood pressure medications from my regime I left the hospital with.
- No bad news by any measure from appointments.
- Feeling stronger all around every day.
- There has been NO deficits or deficiencies as a result of my brain surgery to date.
The Lord is absolutely at work here and it shows plainly every day. Thank you all so much for your love, prayers, and support.

Picture Journey
Here are some pictures from the past few weeks. They symbolize the progress, support and love that I am grateful for over this enduring time!
Just before brain sugery.
This is a view of my wall while inside my ICU recovery room. This meant so much to me as it shows the support so many people sent in. This is not even everything, just a glimpse.
This is just after surgery on my brain.
First open picture of the entry to my skull complete with drain tube for pressure release.
One of my great nurses...the staff was clearly supplied by the Lord as their attitudes and skills were so encouraging.

This journey began on April 27 when I went into my family Doctor to explore why I was having severe headaches. Headaches that were all over my head and causing blurred vision. Due to the severity, he suggested I have an immediate cat-scan and sent me right over to the hospital.
After some waiting and further headaches, the Radiologist was finished reading the scans. He was kind and calmly told me that there was a 'mass' present on my right side temporal lobe running from front to back behind my ear. This would definitely explain some things, but certainly left a great deal out there. No one was with me and I did not even know where to start. I called my mother and family was soon by my side! I was so blessed to be able to have someone by my side.
I was checked into the ICU and proceeded to slowly wade through the implications a brain tumor would have on my life. Within the next few days I had brain surgery to reduce the size of the mass and recovered in the surgical ICU for a week before coming home.
I am home now and feeling stronger but there is still so much to wade through. My goal is to use this blog page to post updates, needs, goals and gratitudes as I walk hand-in-hand with the Lord to conquer this tumor.
